It encapsulated the gay experience in a relatable, but not in a garishly sad way. I loved seeing the too-real story of feeling inadequate or minimized by her gender. Reagan has all the qualities of the “gay mom” friend we all need. It’s a very real look at how expectations can shape and morph us into being someone other than who we want to be. Further, I loved the light it shed on how crippling “otherness” can be. I was enamored with Reagan at the onset - from the first mention of her “Chicken Nuggets Made Me Gay” t-shirt, I was hers. And I am pleased to report that Erica Lee did not disappoint. Now, as my group’s designated event fake-girlfriend, I had high expectations for this book. In no world did she imagine that she would find herself falling head over heels for her best friend’s sister, Charlie.
